Webflow Integration

Connect your Webflow account to AltText.ai and we'll write alt text for the images in your CMS Collections automatically — as soon as an item is created or updated. You can also generate alt text for any image directly inside the Webflow Designer, and bulk import your existing CMS images.

Setup

Log in to your AltText.ai account, go to the Account: Integration Settings tab, and click the section labeled "Webflow".

  1. Click Connect to Webflow. You'll be sent to Webflow to authorize AltText.ai.
  2. Choose the site (or sites) you want to connect, and click Authorize.
  3. That's it. We register the CMS webhooks for you — there is nothing else to configure.

Your settings page will show Webflow connected with the sites you authorized. From that moment on, whenever a CMS item with an image is created or updated and that image has no alt text, we generate it and write it back to the item automatically.

Note

Alt text is written to the item's staged content. It goes live the next time you publish your site, as part of your normal publish flow.

Automatic alt text for CMS items

Once connected, no further action is needed:

  • Add or update a CMS item that contains an image field.
  • If the image's alt field is empty, AltText.ai generates alt text and writes it back within a few seconds.
  • Images that already have alt text are left alone — we never overwrite alt text you wrote yourself, and we never spend a credit on an image that's already covered.

Each image uses one credit, the same as any other AltText.ai integration.

Using the Designer Extension

The AltText.ai Designer Extension lets you see and fix alt text coverage while you're building pages, without leaving the Designer.

  1. In the Webflow Designer, open the Apps panel from the left toolbar.
  2. Find AltText.ai and click to launch it.
  3. The panel connects using your site's existing AltText.ai link — there is nothing to sign in to. If the site isn't connected yet, the panel will point you to your integration settings.

The panel scans the current page and shows every image, its alt text, and what's missing:

  • Write alt text for N images generates alt text for everything on the page that needs it.
  • Write next to a single image generates alt text for just that one.
  • Apply appears when an image already has alt text in your AltText.ai library — applying it is free and doesn't use a credit.

The panel rescans automatically when you switch pages or add images, and your remaining credits are always shown in the header.

Importing existing images

To process the CMS images your site already has, use the bulk import tool. Go to Images, click the Import tab, then select Webflow.

  1. Pick the site and check the collections you want to import from.
  2. Click Find Images.

We walk the collections you chose and count every image that's missing alt text before anything is generated — you'll see the total on the progress card first, and the import refuses to start if it needs more credits than you have. Images that already have alt text in Webflow are skipped and never charged.

The import runs in the background — you can close the page and come back. Track it under Images > Import > Bulk Imports, which shows the total found, generated, skipped, and failed counts in real time, and keeps a history of completed imports.

Note

If some collections couldn't be read (for example, one was deleted after you picked it), the import finishes what it can and is labeled (partial) so you know it didn't cover everything.

Troubleshooting

The extension says "This site isn't connected yet." The Designer Extension uses your site's connection to AltText.ai. Open Account: Integration Settings: Webflow in AltText.ai, connect the site, then click Check again in the panel.

A CMS item changed but no alt text appeared. We only generate for images whose alt field is empty — if the item's image already has alt text, we leave it alone. Also check that the site is listed under Webflow connected in your integration settings; if the connection shows a warning, disconnect and reconnect to re-register the webhooks.

Alt text isn't showing on my live site. Alt text is written to staged content. Publish your site and it will be included.

I disconnected Webflow. What happens? We remove our webhooks, stop generating, and revoke the Designer Extension's access. Alt text already written to your CMS stays exactly where it is.
